With Red lipsticks being very popular at the moment and me trying to find my perfect shade of red I found out a few more things then I had anticipated....

Well this may not be news to some people as it was to me but it really did shock me to find out that nearly 50% of all lipsticks manufactured in the US contains pig fat to give the shiny appearance!
I always thought to myself that in this day and age where there are so many synthetic & vegetarian alternative's cosmetic companies wouldn't still be using animal derived ingredients but I was very disappointed by what I found.
The very brief summary below shows a list's all the animal, fish, insect derived ingredients which are used routinely in majority of lipsticks here in the UK.
Names of animal derived ingredients.
Wax (usually beeswax) provides the solid shape of the lipstick.
Glycerine (usually an animal or vegetable byproduct) also known as glycerides, glyceryls, glycreth-26, polyglycerol is used as an emmolient. (to soften)
Fish scale is also used to give shimmer to some lipsticks.
Panthenol, Dexpanthenol, Vitamin B-complex factor, Provitamin B-5 (also known as panthenyl)
Lanolin (also known as aliphatic alcohols, cholesterin, isopropyl lanolate, laneth, lanogene, lanolin alcohols, lanosterols, sterols, triterpene alcohols) used as a emollient which is derived from sheep wool.
Lactic Acid from blood and muscle.
Tallo, tallowate, stearic acid from fat of animals.
Carmine. The many shades of the shades of red/orange tints are made from a bug yes! a bug called 'Cochineal'.
Cochineal is a tiny beetle found mainly in South America & Mexico and carmine (which is the actual name of the dye) is obtained from the body and eggs. The carmine dye can be found in the ingredients list as carmine, cochineal extract, crimson lake, natural c4. c.1.75470 and E120.
In my quest to find a non animal, insect derived lipstick I found that there only a few limited choice out there but you do have to work a little bit harder as they are not as readily available on your nearest high streets.
Non vegan/vegetarian lipstick brands.
Unfortunately 1 of my favourite everyday lipstick (Moisture Drench) from Boots no7 is the first victim in my list, as all of their 'Moisture Drench' lipsticks have glycerine, lanolin & panthenol and apart from shades 'starshell & devine' have carmine as an ingredient also.
The other 2 ranges within the no7 brand 'Sheer Temptation' & 'Stay Perfect' are also no exception as they also have glycerine, lanolin, panthenol, lactic acid all which are animal derived byproduct and doesn't say otherwise ie vegetable substitute.
L'Oreal Lipsticks are my second everyday faves but as many have Carmine along with Lanolin Oil they are no longer in my make -up bag which is such a shame as I loved their colour selection.
Mac which again is a favourite and a very popular brand and favoured by many make-up artist's is also a culprit as they use Carmine in many of their lip colours along with Glyceryl Triacetyl Hydroxystearate a blend of fats and oils (which can be from animal & plant) which makes the lipstick more moisturising.
Bourjois Lipsticks also have Polyglyceryl-2 triisostearate a glycerine which is animal derived and use Carmine as a tint.
Rimmel lipsticks also have Lanolin, Carmine, etc ...
No 17, Collection 2000, Revlon, Max factor, Chanel, Dior, Elizabeth Arden, Estee Lauder, Clinique, Clarins, Lancom, YSL non of these brands are vegan/vegetarian friendly and I'm sure the list is not exhausted.
It seems that the list is endless as all the cosmetics brands that I use on a regular basis do not have non animal/bug/fish derived lipstick and in no way thinking about their vegan or vegetarian users.
I think the best way to forward in this lipstick issue is to believe that all lipsticks have some animal, insect, fish derived byproduct and to research first your choice of lippy.
Most companies do not give full ingredient list on the actual product so its worth your while to check by going online or by contacting the cosmetic's companies direct themselves. Most are happy to respond to your query.
Now that we have a clearer picture that most of the popular cosmetics brand are not vegan/vegetarian friendly and I'm sure as none of us fancy having crushed bugs, animal extracts and fish scales on our lips the next task is to find ourselves some animal/bug friendly cosmetics brands.
The most obvious choice would be 'The Body Shop' but unfortunately their lipsticks are made from lanolin & beeswax and not so animal friendly as made out to be.
The second choice is 'Barry M' as they are supposed to be a vegetarian brand and available on most high street via 'Superdrugs' or 'Boots' also online direct from www.barrym.com BUT please do be cautious some of the lipsticks have carmine again depending on the shade so its worth double checking the ingredients list.
This is the list of Natural, Organic and some Vegan/vegetarian friendly cosmetics Brands that I have found but I think it is still sensible to double check before making a purchase.

ReplyDeleteHope you're well. I'm always researching cosmetics that are halal or free of animal products altogether.
It would be best to email cosmetic companies directly when you are researching animal products in cosmetic lines. Boots for example use vegetable derived ingredients in their no. 7 lines, except for a few items such as Lanolin and Carmine (I can't remember the others off the top of my head but I have their email saved) - they definitely don't use pork derived ingredients. The same goes for Bourjois - again I can't remember the exact list off the top of my head but theydl did email me a list.
A lot of companies now use vegetable derived products, nobodg I have emailed so far uses pork derived ingredients which was one of my main concerns!

DeleteI believe that a few of the Boots lipsticks do have animal derived byproducts as mentioned above and this was shown to me in store with their ingredient list. The same is true with boujois lipsticks. I did a very thorough research whilst blogging and especially on the brands that I use myself.

A great brand for lipsticks (vegan) is Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics which can be purchased at www.love-makeup.co.uk. They have tons of shades which you can also mix together for more customised colours. They come in a tube and are long lasting.

ReplyDeleteI know abour loccitane it's based in UK and does not use animal derived substances in their products however it is highly advised that you check the ingredients pertaining to specific products with the company. And please share if any information obtained.
